Simply the best microbiology review book

This book is great. It covers everything you need to know for step 1, while leaving out all you dont' need to know. The questions are probably the best micro vignette questions out there, and helps reinforce what you learned from the book.
This book is much better than micro made ridiculously simple in terms of boards review. Its written in outline format so you can get through it much faster, and it includes an immunology section that has all you need to know for the immunology questions on the step.

The only thing I don't like is the Rapid Review format. At times the outline format should be written in complete sentences (like the high-yield series) to avoid confusing statments/facts. For me, this seemed especially true in the immunology section, which can be confusing if you have a weak immuno background.

Other than that, this is a great review book. The only review book for micro in my opinion.

Review of Microbiology and Immunology

Perfect for medical microbio class. I used Micro Made easy for class, and after reading this book to review for the boards I would definately recommend it over Micro made easy. The organization is better, it's a shorter , has an outline format, has excellent tables that while are not as detailed as the micro made easy book are a lot easier to read, and it has everything you need to know for class, which micro made easy does not.

Immuno section is a bit brief but it has all the essentials. I would also recommend reading Immunobiology by Janeway and Medical Microbiology by Murray. Both s are outstanding and really help you appreciate the subjects.

CD needs to be improved!!!!

Book itself is excellent! Very easy to digest all information. I tried to use CD to answer questions. Programm doesn't let to check all incorrect answers, instead it shows some of them or totally different answers from what i did answer. I verified it. Some of the questions repeat in the next test and keeps coming up again and again. My conclusion: CD is totally usless, but book is excellent for studying and i am still happy.

Gamble paid off!

Everyone at my medical school endorses BRS and HY so I wasn't too sure about this series, but I took a gamble (same price as HY with & ??'s like BRS). I'm glad I did!

The book does an excellant job of condensing the relevent information in digestable portions with outstanding diagrams. I read this book over summer before 2nd year, about 5 months after completing my Biochem coursework. I did well in classes but had HMG CoA totally mixed up between ketones and cholesterol (as just one example) but this book put the big picture, comparative information and necessary details together for me.

It's a great confidence builder and even though Biochem isn't considered the highest yield topic for Step 1, I would invest in this book.

Goljan Path

This is the single most useful and board relevant book on the market. I had the pleasure of using this in accompaniment with Dr. Goljan's audio lectures from a review course. The two resources, audio and , proved to be invaluable in both building my confidence and ability to disect the USMLE Step I exam. Additionally, the images used in the and referenced in the audio lectures were in fact the very same pictures I saw on my test. I must clarify, however, the audio lectures are not sold with the . They can, however, be found on the web for those who are really interested.

The organizes and describes in a few sentences salient points that seem to be wholly absent from the much larger and more daunting Robbins. Furthermore, the comes equiped with a rapid review CD-ROM full of about 300 questions. They are excellent questions with explanations that are more thorough and thought provoking than Kaplan's Qbank. I felt as though this was better than the BRS-Pathology though some may disagree. In my own opinion, Goljan is more concise and emphasizes the board relavent material more so than BRS. Although it is not and should not be used as a stand alone , in conjunction with Robbins, First Aid, and Kaplan Qbank, you should feel very well prepared to tackle the pathology, pathophysiology, and even microbio-pathology questions.

May be a dense read, BUT has the most high-yield info of any path review book

This book is the best review book for pathology. For over 25 years, Dr. Goljan has accumlated "insight" from students after taking their step 1. He knows what the boards people want medical students to know and everything that could be asked on step 1 is in this book...and as pathology accounts for the majority of the test, mastering all the facts in this book will definitely help you score high.
Rapid Review Pathology reads like First Aid and is loaded with high-yield facts, BUT like First Aid it is sometimes hard to read. It is written in outline format and is more like a list of facts (like all books in the Rapid Review series). In comparison, the BRS series books are also in outline format, but the bulleted points are in complete setences making for an easier read. Therefore, students with a weaker background in pathology will have a more difficult time getting through this book than BRS.
That being said, if there were to read any book in addition to First Aid, this would be the book. It is very clinically based, it integrates info from many other subject areas, has many high-yield illustrations, and has very good clinical vignettes. The book also has wide margins where you can take notes into, which is what I'd suggest. This way you can sort of "complete" the sentences and customize the book to you're own study/reading style (this is, by the way, how you should use your First Aid).
I read many reviewers talking about the Goljan audio, but I have a feeling many readers may not know what that is. It's audio files taken from one of Dr. Goljan's lecture series. It follows his Rapid Review book 90% of the time and is great in understanding many of the facts he has listed in the book. You can find the audio from online med student forums, however they maybe copyrighted...in any case, if you can get your hands on them and listen to them using this rapid review book as "lecture notes" you'd definitely do well on the step. He has a way of explaining pathology (and all clinical medicine) like no other.
So again, if you memorize and "understand" EVERY point in this book, and every point in First Aid, you will do well on step 1.

Good Board Review Material

This book, esp if used in conjunction with Dr. Goljan's lecture series, is excellent high-yield info for the pathology section of Step 1. I wouldn't advise letting it be your only source for path review, however, but it ties a lot of things together that other path review books (e.g. BRS, Kaplan, Robbins) do not. It also has some nice pics.

Mcqe questions have been collected from a wide variety of sources, they are abbreviated, and they include clinical diagnosis, disease pathogenesis, differential diagnosis, clinical management, internal medicine, surgery, epidemiology, public health, obstetrics, gynecology, pediatrics, and psychiatry. The questions are mostly clinical medicine. Pure biochemistry, physiology, and pharmacology questions are not included. The program does not include graphics. Each edition of the program contain a different number of questions. The number of questions varies, not necessarily increases with the advance of editions. We limit our questions to useful 2 lines and 4 answers because, contrary to what some believe, the intent of this question bank program is to give a general review and not to teach the users how the questions are formatted. Some of the actual USMLE questions may occupy the entire page and have 4 or 5 answers and some even more than 10 answers.

The 2007 has great updates in format!

I had the 2005 FA right when I started med school as a resource, but when I got ready to actually study for Step 1, a number of folks I knew had the 2006 which was organ-systems based. Since our curriculum was organ-systems, I decided it would be worth the investment, so I got the 2007. The 2007 is even better than the 2006, it has really good "basics" sections and the organ systems are well organized and logical. The new Psych portion is great! I think this is a great resource, like any book, it has a few mistakes, but the corrections are out there on the web, so it is easy to fix the few things - if you didn't catch them as your were stuyding anyway. Fabulous, worth it!

Good, but dissapointing

I found the text to be good, but not as good as all the reviews I've read stated. I was hoping that it would be more helpful than it actually is. The "USMLE questions" are not multiple choice questions, but one-line clinical scenarios given at the beginning of each chapter. If you are looking for a very, very generalized overview of the topics for the USMLE then get the book. However, if you are looking for questions for the USMLE or a more detailed explanation then I suggest another book like the BRS series or something.

buy it and learn to love it

There are some people who can do well on the USMLE step 1 exam without using first aid--I personally don't know any of these people. First Aid is one book you must buy for step 1 preparation. Even if you don't like its format, the information inside it is as high yield as you can get, and many of its mnemonics would definitely be helpful during basic sciences years. Caveats: make sure to find the errata for the edition you buy--there are usually missing pages and multiple errors that can be found by googling "first aid 2007 (or whatever year book you have) errata". And, first aid should not be used as the sole study source for any subject (except for anatomy and possibly pharmacology and behavioral sciences) and thus should be used as a high yield review or a source to compile information from other study resources.

Fantastic Review

Like many have already stated, this is the "Bible" for the Step 1. All the high-yield facts you need, now in system form. The information in here would be sufficient to help anyone to at least pass. The real challenge is how well you can apply the information. That's why you need to supplement with question banks.

This book is amazing. I used for the USMLE Step 2 CK and get a 220. I used with the First Aid, because this book has different information than the FA. I highly recomend to read chapter 29-34 a couple of time they are very helpful.

Well presented chapter but ......

If you are looking to add further information to this book ( as is needed from other sources ) the fact that the s are not in alphabetical order might waste allot of time flipping back and forth and on every occassion having to look to the table. Unlike First Aid, where the s are in alphbetical order ( ex: Cardiovascular, Dermatology, Endocrine .... etc.). If it was alphabetical it would allow for faster and more efficient stydying as is needed in preperation of a Step exam. Best of luck.

Quick and concise

One of the better rapid review books out there, but not sufficient as a "sole" review source (although I don't think such a thing as a single review source exists for an exam such as this one). I found it to be a little more on target than First Aid, with better organization, more pertinent information, and concise enough that I could read it in just a few days. There were definitely some good things I picked up from it, and as with any of the review books you read, I would highly advise supplementing it with a lot of practice style questions. Step II is an unpleasant enough experience, but this is a good resource to use to make it a little less dreadful.
